About Me

About Our Classroom

All homework will be given out on Monday and is not due back until Friday.  However, any uncompleted class work will be sent home as homework and should be returned the next day.  If it is not returned the next school day, it will be recorded in the student’s Citizenship Folder, which will affect their citizenship grade.  The student is responsible for all missing homework and folders.

  • Spelling:  A weekly spelling list will be sent home on Monday, but no homework will be assigned.  Your child may study these words in a way that best fits their learning style.  A list of spelling activities will be sent home the first week of school.  Students will take a spelling test on Friday.

  • Math:  Math homework will be given on Monday and is due back on Friday.

  • Reading and Math Log: A weekly reading and math log will be sent home on Monday and will be due the following Monday.  Your child will have an entire week to complete the assignment.  For each day the log is late, 10 points will be deducted.

Homework
Folders

A Citizenship Folder will be sent home everyday.  This folder will contain a behavior chart with comments from the teacher as appropriate.  Normally, I do not write in Citizenship Folders daily.  Please return the Citizenship Folder each day, but do not feel like you need to sign it daily.  It will be strictly used for communication when needed.

On Thursday, a Wrangler Folder will be sent home containing notes from the office and general information.

Gradebook

In order to keep informed about your student’s performance, parents may create an account and log into gradebook on the LISD website.

Library Books

Library is scheduled Tuesday from 1:00 to 1:45.  Students will check out two books from the library, one of these books will be read to a kindergarten or fourth grade buddy on Friday.  Please remind your child to bring library books back to school on our library day and Friday.

Reading Buddies

Second grade students will read to kindergarten and fourth grade students on Fridays.  Please have your child practice reading their books throughout the week in order to make this a positive experience for your child and their reading buddy.

Security

In an effort to keep our children safe, outside doors will be locked at 8:15.  The only doors to remain open will be at the front entrance.  Parents must check-in at the office and be issued a visitor nametag when entering the building.

Lunch and Snacks

Please send healthy, non-sugar drinks and snacks.  Students are welcome to have bottled water in the room, provided it has a snap-shut lid.

Lunch is scheduled from 11:30 to 12:00.

Birthday Celebrations

Birthday celebrations are always welcomed, but can only be celebrated at the end of the day.  With the increase in food allergies, it is imperative parents not bring food items to school.  Appropriate items to be handed out for birthday celebrations might include pencils, stickers, or erasers.  In addition, birthday invitations can no longer be passed out in the classroom or sent home in folders.

Conferences

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.  You are always welcome in our classroom.  My conference times are 10:15 and 1:50.  You can also contact me through email, kandersen@lubbockisd.org or by phone

Arrival and Dismissal

Students should enter through the front main doors.  Please do not drop off your child in the teacher’s parking lot.  It is not safe! The cafeteria entrance is for teachers and staff.

School will begin at 7:35 with morning work.  If students arrive before 7:35 they will report to the cafeteria.  Students will begin work upon entering the room.  If students arrive after 7:45, the second bell, they will need to report to the office in order to receive a tardy slip. Unfinished morning work will be completed during break.  Our morning atmosphere sets the tone for the day, so please help your child start their day off on the right foot.

We dismiss at 3:25 from the front east door.  Students will sign out with me each day before leaving the campus.  Students need to be picked up promptly at 3:25.  Students who have not been picked up by 3:35 will be sent to the office for pick up.

It is my goal to make your child independent and responsible.  It is important to let your child take on the responsibility of unpacking and preparing for the exciting day ahead.  In other words, please do not unpack your student’s backpack, turn in their papers, or complete their morning work.  Our goal is to raise successful, independent citizens and it starts with the little things.  My goal is to give them as many choices as possible and guide them to be independent.  I try not to do anything for my students they are capable of doing themselves.  Personal experience is a great teacher!

This is my 16th year at Roscoe Wilson and I am looking forward to a great year.  I’ve included a little information about myself to answer some of the questions you might have.

I spent the first several years of my life on a cotton farm near Kress, Texas, population 865.  I have four siblings, all of which attended Texas Tech University and married Red Raiders.  My undergraduate degree is in Human Sciences and I later earned my Masters in Education degree from Wayland Baptist University.  I recently completed an additional 15 hours of graduate work in reading instruction through Texas Tech University.  I truly love school.

My husband, Mark, is from Lubbock and owns a landscape spraying business.  We also ranch near Dickens.  Mark and I have two amazing kids, Kash and McCall.  Kash and McCall previously Roscoe Wilson, so my affection for Roscoe Wilson runs deep.  Kash is a graduate of Texas Tech and McCall is a junior at Tech.

On the weekend I love to canoe, backpack, garden, and read.  We attend First United Methodist Church and love living in Lubbock.

I look forward to spending the year with your child and I promise not to believe all the stories I hear about you, if you promise not to believe all the stories you hear about me!!!  I am eagerly awaiting your child where we will begin the very important task of “Lassoing-In” a Great Year!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Andersen

In this class we focus on keeping a growth mindset. That means we always can find ways to learn through our mistakes, and we praise the process and not the answer. Watch below to learn more about the two different mindsets.
